August 2012: Tips, eNews & More!

Apparently records really were made to be broken. With temperatures soaring and rain fall being minimal this has been another summer for the books. Hopefully the record breaking spirit continues to rub off on our Canadian athletes in London. If the weather and event scheduling work out, try to grab lunch on a local patio with an outdoor TV and cheer on our athletes!

Warm weather and watching athletes at their peak are great motivators to stay active. While you may not be headed to Rio for the 2016 games, perhaps you may take interest in one of the many sports featured in the Olympics. Training for a sport is a great way to maintain fitness as well as mental focus. If a sport catches your eye, look into local leagues and facilities, there is no better day than today to start!

Are you headed off to school next month?
Many post secondary institutions offer health plans that include dental coverage. If you are enrolled in a post secondary program, remember to look into the coverage offered to you. Your new school schedule may keep you busy, remember to make your oral health a priority.

If you'd like to schedule a dental checkup or cleaning appointment with Dr. Nick before the kids get back to school click here

Getting To The Root Of The Situation!

The root canal procedure is often the most effective way to save a natural tooth once a cavity/decay, infection or injury has gone too far for a simple repair.

The outer layer of your tooth is made of a hard substance called enamel. This layer is made to withstand chewing forces and the daily activities of your mouth. It also protects the dentin and pulp portion of your teeth that are connected directly to your bloodstream and nourish the tooth.

The layer of enamel, although strong, is by no means indestructible. Once a problem has passed the enamel and entered the dentin and pulp of your tooth, infection often occurs. This can be painful for your tooth and your health can be adversely affected. Root Canal Therapy is the removal of the 'root' where the blood vessels and nerves are found. This stops any further infection from entering the bloodstream as well as removing the source of pain from your mouth. The area or 'canal' is then filled and the tooth is repaired with a crown.

Greater Toronto REALTORS® reported 7,570 sales in July 2012, representing a decline of 1.5 per cent compared to 7,683 sales reported in July 2011. The decline was most pronounced in the condominium apartment segment in the City of Toronto. Total sales in the rest of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) were up compared to the same period last year. "Very strong annual sales growth in the first half of 2012 and an earlier peak in sales this spring compared to 2011 help explain more moderate sales this summer. New mortgage lending guidelines and the additional upfront cost of the City of Toronto land transfer tax also prompted some households to put their buying decision on hold," said Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) President Ann Hannah.

Refresh, Hydrate and Enjoy!

Are you having friends and family over for a get together? Spending time on the patio? Entertaining guests? It is hot, your guests are thirsty, but as you may recall, we recently advised you to stay away from serving sugary preservative filled drinks.

Did we hear someone say LEMONADE?
What a great idea! Homemade lemonades let you control the ingredients and flavour to the taste of your guests. While there are endless options for making lemonade, here is one to get you started.
